FAQs

The SPF (Sun Protection Factor) value indicates the time it takes for the epidermis to develop erythema (sunburn) induced by UVB rays. For example, if your skin burns in 10 minutes without sunscreen but takes 250 minutes (about 4 hours) to burn with sunscreen, then the sunscreen allows you to be exposed to UVB rays 25 times longer and has an SPF value of 25.

Although SPF50 is recommended for the beach to space out reapplications and prevent sunburn, even SPF15 with regular application is sufficient for daily sun protection (as recommended by the National Cancer Institute and Professor Adele Green). In fact, SPF25 offers almost equivalent protection to SPF50, covering 96% of UVB rays, while SPF50 adds only 1 to 2% more protection, apart from longer duration of protection.

However, SPF only refers to protection against UVB (B for Burn), which causes sunburn.

On a daily basis, the focus should be on preventing UVA rays (A for Age), which are responsible for premature skin aging (pigment spots and wrinkles). SPF does not guarantee protection against UVA rays: it is the PA or PPD (UVA Protection Index) that indicates this protection. In addition, it is essential to have protection against visible blue light, as it works in synergy with UVA rays to cause the appearance of pigment spots or hyperpigmentation.
